The Contractor Who Quotes First Usually Gets the Job
Homeowners get three quotes. They rarely wait for all three before deciding who they trust.
Sean Hutchinson
The standard advice to homeowners is to get three quotes. What actually happens is they contact three contractors, one responds quickly and professionally, and the other two arrive after the homeowner has already formed a preference.
Being cheapest doesn't reliably win. Being first, clear and easy to deal with very often does.
What a Slow Quote Signals
To you, a three-day turnaround means you were on site all week and did quotes on Sunday evening. To the homeowner it reads as a preview of what working with you will be like: slow to respond, hard to reach, unclear on timing.
That's unfair, and it's also how the decision gets made. Responsiveness during the sales process is the only evidence a customer has about your reliability before they commit.
Acknowledgement Is Not the Quote
Most contractors conflate replying with quoting, so they say nothing until the full number is ready. But an immediate reply saying you've got the enquiry, roughly when the price will come, and what you'll need to see buys you days of patience.
It also lets you collect the details that make the eventual quote faster and more accurate: photos, access, age of the system, timeline. Turning up to measure something you could have seen in a photo is where quoting time actually goes.
The Follow-Up Almost Nobody Does
A meaningful share of quotes are never followed up even once. The customer never said no. They got busy, and the silence turned into a decision.
One check-in a few days later recovers a surprising number of those. It's not pushy if it's useful: confirming the price still stands, offering to answer questions, noting how far out the schedule is. The contractors who do this consistently have a system that doesn't depend on remembering.
