How a Slow Website Loses You Local Customers

Search penalties are the least of your problems. The real cost of a slow site is the person who tapped your listing, waited, and tapped the next one.

Sean Hutchinson

Conversations about site speed usually turn into conversations about SEO, which is a shame, because it buries the part that costs real money. Ranking slightly lower is abstract. Someone abandoning your site before it renders is a lost job you'll never know about.

For local businesses this matters more than for most, because the traffic arrives in the worst possible conditions: on a phone, on mobile data, from someone who has three other tabs open with your competitors in them.

Picture the Actual Visit

Someone's boiler has failed. They search, they tap the first plumber, and they're standing in a cold kitchen holding a phone on one bar of signal. They are not browsing. They want a phone number and an indication you can come today.

If your homepage loads a large hero image, three web fonts and a video background before showing a phone number, you've lost them, because the next listing showed its number faster.

What's Usually to Blame

Images, almost always. A photo exported straight from a camera or phone can be several megabytes; the same photo sized properly for the web is a small fraction of that and looks identical on screen. This one fix resolves the majority of slow local business sites.

After that it's third-party scripts. Every chat widget, analytics tag, booking embed and tracking pixel is code from someone else's server that your page waits on. Each one seems harmless. Six of them together are why the page takes five seconds.

Then there are page builders that ship the styling for every feature they offer whether you use them or not. Convenient to build with, expensive to load.

What to Fix First

Get the essential information rendering immediately: who you are, what you do, where you are, and how to contact you. Everything else can load afterwards. A visitor who can tap 'Call' in the first second doesn't care that the gallery is still loading.

Test on a real phone on mobile data rather than a desktop on office wifi. Desktop testing hides exactly the conditions your customers are actually in, which is why so many owners are convinced their site is fast.
